Default 22" Thin Rim Bubinga Platter

Here are some pictures of a 22" Platter cut from a single chunk of 8/4 Bubinga. It is dished out in the middle, the rim and bowl are only 1/4" thick. There was a lot of material removed to get here...The pictures don't do it justice.

The $20 bill is there for sizing...

Due to the depth of cut I couldn't use the dust collector....O My what A mess...red dust everywhere...

"Its a 5 gallon can of Lacquer Thinner." I have the same style chair only I have a pile of shop towels on it for that extra plush look!

    Pat,
You guys and your fancy "high fulutin" computer chairs. Check mine out. It comes with the optional cushion and as you can see adjusts to 3 different heights, lets see your can do that!

BTW... how did you get the cut so nice? It looks as if it was cut on a lathe. What type of toolpathing did you use on that? Very nice.

Pat - What brand of lathe is that at the end of your table? Is it controlled by the Shopbot or do you just turn it with the original lathe motor?

    Brad,
That is not a real lathe... It was a Harbor Freight lathe when I bought it... Now that is my home grown indexer. Both Dirk Dunham and I have the same electronics to control the indexer.

I will post a side view picture of the platter when I get home.

Here is a side shot of the platter...I guess it looks more like a hat. THe blank was a little over 2" thick to start. The rim thickness is 1/4". Intially the bottom was completely round, so I machined a 2" diameter flat spot.

    Jack,
I do like the "JJ 3-Way Adjustable Shop Chair (c)".
